Obituary of Charles L. Leonard

Charles Leo Leonard, 88, of Lawrenceville, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at home. Born in Taunton, Mass, he resided in Springfield, MA, San Mateo, CA, Overland Park, KN, West Trenton, NJ, before coming to Lawrenceville in 1979. Formerly employed by Calart Flowers of Providence, RI, Charles was their chief floral designer and color consultant for interior floral displays. He traveled extensively for this firm and was cited as one of the country’s top floral designers. His designs won recognitions at both the Seattle and New York World Fairs. After closing his business in Taunton, MA, he became floral design manager of the original Yardley Florist in Yardley, PA until 1979. He then became the design manager for The Lawrence Road Florist until 1989. He was the owner of The Mill Flower & Gifts in Pennington, NJ until his retirement in 1994. A former parishioner of St. Joseph parish in Taunton, MA, he was past president of the Holy Name Society and Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was also a member of the Ozanum School of Charity. He held membership on the Western MA Floral Society and the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD). Charles was an active member of the Church of St. Ann in Lawrenceville. He was a member in long standing of the Art/Environment Committee and Liturgical Groups where he continued to share his expertise in floral design and visual display. He assisted in design of the Grandparents’ Garden and was active on the Gardners Committee. In addition, he was a Eucharistic Minister, Miraculous Medal Novena and Resurrection choir member. Predeceased by his parents Thomas J. and Bertha Leonard, his siblings Thomas J. Leonard, David W. Leonard, Beryl J. Miller and Audrey Hall, his lifetime partner and spouse of 56 years Stanley R. Haines who recently passed away on July 2; he is survived his brother Richard G. Leonard, his brother-in-law, Henry B. Hall; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and business associates. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 11AM at The Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Attendees are asked to arrive by 10:45AM. There will be no calling hours. Inurnment will follow at Lawrenceville Cemetery. Please follow all social distancing guidelines and masks must be worn at all times. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The St. Vincent de Paul Society at The Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
