Dear Maryanne: we never met but like Peter, I too was a fraternity brother of Mark and I just learned of his passing. I am so very sorry for your loss. I last saw Mark shortly before he left for the Marines. I always worried about him during his enlistment as he went in at a very fraught time during that awful, wasteful war. I later learned that he survived those years and was happily back in the USA with you. One thing I wanted to share with you: Mark was the kindest person I had ever met at Hunter. Perhaps he viewed me as a puppy (I was very young, 16, when wefirst met and he showed me his kindness.) During our fraternity's hell night Mark made a point of putting his arm over my shoulder, told me not to worry, all will be fine and he'd make sure I'd survive and be OK. I believe we both teared up, smiled and got on with the crazy, final festivities. For some reason, in a lifetime of forgotten memories I still remember that one. Such genuine kindness and empathy for a very young teenager....My very best, Gary

I cannot remember the reason, but in 1969 or '70, Mark gave me his copy of Jean-Paul Sartre's "No Exit and Three Other Plays." We were members of a fraternity at a public university in the Bronx. I liked Mark, yet we did not see each other or correspond essentially lost touch with each other after graduation, or for almost 50 years. I still have the paperback. When I learned today from a friend who was also a fraternity brother of ours that Mark had died earlier this month, I took the book off the shelf and held it and remembered him. I opened it and learned that "No Exit" had its world premier in May 1944, the month Mark was born. Reading this Guest Book's biographical notation about him, I'm proud to have known him and sorry we did not connect during these decades. I too ended up in journalism, as an editor & reporter who's known many photographers. It would have thrilled me to know that Mark had made such a name for himself. The book our book remains my link to him. Now it needs another reading.

Mark will be missed, his wit and knowledge of world events
was always interesting, but the thing that brought a smile to his face were his doggies.

Farewell, dear Mark. Thanks for your advice, inspiration and friendship all those years ago. You were a true professional and The Times was lucky to have you for those two decades. Profound condolences to Maryanne, Alphie, Sushi and Max. May you be greeted and hugged by your beloved "children" who crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
