Charles J. Fritz
On December 14, 2014, four days after his 90th birthday, Charles Joseph Fritz passed away peacefully at Meadow Lakes retirement community in Hightstown.
Charles was born in Jamaica, New York in 1924 and grew up in Brooklyn. There he attended P.S. 56 and Bushwick High School. A baseball player and Brooklyn Dodgers fan, Charles also enjoyed playing basketball and collecting stamps as a young man.
Like most young men of his generation, when World War II broke out Charles proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was a decorated WW II veteran having served with the 443rd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion in Normandy, the Ardennes Counteroffensive (The Battle of the Bulge), and the Rhineland Campaign. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Silver Service Star and one Bronze Service Star. Following the war, he graduated from New York University in 1949 and worked at the McGraw-Hill Company for 45 years. In 1963, Charles and his wife, Anna, moved to Lawrenceville, NJ where they resided for 47 years. There he was a member of American Legion Post 414, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3022, and Cranbury Golf Club.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Donohue Fritz and his son, Martin D. Fritz. Charles is survived by his children, Dr. Gerard Fritz (Valerie) of Bridgewater, Christina D. Sellers (Jack) of Robbinsville, and Carleen F. Knauf (Duane) of Vienna, VA. He was proud of his ten grandchildren, Amanda, Monica and Charlie Fritz; Thomas, Christopher and Matthew Sellers and Alyssa, Martin, Kirsten and Corey Knauf.
Dad, Charlie, Pop Pop, Mr. Fritz, whatever you called him, enjoyed golf, crossword puzzles, his daily Manhattan (or two), Friday night poker games and watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He will always be fondly remembered as The Good-Looking German.
The family is grateful to the staff of Meadow Lakes and Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care for their care and support of Charles and Anna the past five years.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11AM at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
Interment will follow in Lawrenceville Cemetery.
