John W. Brennan, 82, of Ewing passed away quietly at home on Tuesday January 29, 2013. Born and raised in New York City, John was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory School, Class of 1948. He continued on with his studies and received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University, Class of 1952 and his PhD from Harvard University. As a Professor of History, he taught for several years at Catholic University while living in Washington, DC and later for Long Island University Brooklyn from where he retired in 2002 after 37 years of distinguished service. While at LIU John was awarded the school's prestigious David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994. He also was chosen by his peers to chair LIU's Faculty Senate for several years. John was a proud member of the Church of St. Ann in Lawrenceville. He also was a lifetime member of the American Historical Association and was passionate about the study of history. He devoted much time to scholarly work related to early 20th century British political history and enjoyed many trips abroad to London and Edinburgh in pursuit of his work. John also served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged from the United States Army. Son of the late Charles F. and Agnes Connell Brennan, husband of the late Noreen Sullivan Brennan and brother of the late Charles F. and James A. Brennan, he is survived by his loving son, Michael T. Brennan of Alexandria, VA; a niece Kathleen Taylor of Sayville, NY, a nephew Charles Brennan of New Paltz, NY, a special friend from graduate school, Zdenek David of Washington, DC, and many other dear cousins, friends and colleagues. Funeral services for John will be held on Tuesday beginning at 9 AM at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road (Rt. 206), Lawrenceville, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM in the Church of St. Ann, Lawrenceville. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Hamilton, NJ. Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Long Island University, Development Office, University Center, 700 Northern Boulevard, Brookville, NY 11548-1326 (note "Brooklyn campus scholarships" on the check).
