Herman I. Smith, 92, of Ewing Twp., passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at home. Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was a resident of Ewing for 57 years. Herman was a graduate of Fairforest High School, Class of 1945., graduated from Spartanburg Junior College in 1947, and attended Wofford College from 1947-1948 majoring in psychology. Herman graduated from Westminster Choir College in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in music. He was bass soloist with Westminster Choir and served as president of his sophomore class and president of the student council his senior year. Herman served as music director for more then 40 years in North Carolina, Maryland and New Jersey. He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ewing for 55 years. Herman served as president of the congregation and has been active in the functions of the church over the years. Predeceased by his parents Charles R. and Mabel Bell Smith; his spouse Shirley Joan Smith; he is survived by his children and their spouses Teri D. and Gary Marszalek, Joel H. Smith, April L. and Paul J. Marino, and Timothy L. and Sheri R. Smith; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four nephews. Funeral services and inurnment will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Herman’s memory to Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church 1125 Parkside Ave, Ewing, NJ 08618.
