Warren J. Sunderland, 85, of Lawrenceville died at his home on Saturday.
Born and raised in Philadelphia he had been a Lawrenceville resident for 54 years.
Mr. Sunderland was a WWII Navy veteran. While serving in the Navy he entered Officer Candidate School at Cornell University in 1944. After his discharge Mr. Sunderland continued to study at Cornell and graduated in 1948 with his B.S. in Engineering. In 1952, Mr. Sunderland earned his M.S. in engineering from Drexel University.
Mr. Sunderland was a professional civil engineer for 55 years. He began his career in 1948 with the New Jersey Division of Transportation. He retired from the NJDOT as the Chief of the Bureau of Structural Design in 1985. In 1986 he went to work as a consulting engineer for Arora and Associates in Lawrenceville and retired in 2003.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Ewing and the Trenton Elks #105.
Son of the late Thomas and Mabel Goodfellow Sunderland, and husband of the late Lois A. Thayer Sunderland, he is survived by his four daughters and sons-in-law; Lois and Joe Petrillo of Philadelphia, Elaine and John Yaros of Hopewell, Karen and Gary Schino of Indian Mills, NJ and Laura and Thomas Farley of Lawrenceville, his eight grandchildren; Warren Petrillo, John, Brian, Michael and Scott Yaros, Thomas Farley and his wife Haley, James Farley and Briana Schino, and his brother Charles Sunderland.
Funeral services will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 1985 Pennington Road, Ewing. Burial will be in the Ewing Church Cemetery.
