Kathleen Smith Hubley, 93, of Pennington, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Preston, Lancashire, England, on December 22, 1924, Kathleen attended St. Mathews School and the Park School in Preston. At a young age, she went to work at Blackburn’s as a welder during World War II and at Dick Kerr’s Aeronautics, salvaging and reconditioning military airplanes for reuse and also worked at Courtaulds as a weaver of silk. At age 18, grieving the loss of her father, Kathleen set out for a bike ride in the English countryside. Before long, she found herself helping a young American man, who was lost, back to the military base where he worked as an engineer teaching the Automatic Pilot. It was love at first sight. At age 19, Kathleen married the love of her life, Ross Hubley, and at age 21 they moved to the United States. Kathleen and Ross lived and raised a family in Minnesota, Iowa, and eventually, Pennsylvania. Later in her life, she resided in New Jersey with her daughter and son-in-law. Kathleen’s passion in life was music, she played the piano each and every day – from a young person playing in English pubs to playing for her own enjoyment and the enjoyment of her family and friends. She played both the piano and organ beautifully. Her world revolved around her husband, Ross, and their children and grandchildren and her love of music. Kathleen also enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a 20+ year listener of WRDV-FM radio station in Warminster, PA – which played music from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Kathleen’s abiding love of chocolate and a good cup of tea remained with her through her last days.
Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Davis Smith; her husband of 47 years, Ross Hubley; her brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas and Ada Smith and Ron Smith. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Maureen Hubley, her grandson Ron Hubley and his wife Cathy, and her great grandson Dylan; her loving daughter and son-in-law Judy and Ken Hill, and her grandchildren Alicia, David and Megan; her sister-in-law Freda Smith and niece and nephew Kathleen Napier and Thomas Smith.
