James A. Purgavie, 86, of Hamilton, died Wednesday in the Compassionate Care Hospice. Born in Philadelphia, he resided most of his life in Hamilton. He retired after forty-four years as a railroad engineer with the Pennsylvania Rail Road, Amtrak, and later Conrail. Mr. Purgavie then went to work for the New Jersey State Senate, and retired after fifteen years a a chief Sergeant-at-Arms. Mr. Purgavie was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Son of the late James and Catherine Armour Purgavie,husband of the late, Carmella ""Millie"" Pintinalli Purgavie, grandfather of the late Corinne Biddulph, and brother of the late Charles and Robert Purgavie, he is survived by a daughter Linda Hobson and her husband Bill, a son James Purgavie and his wife Lynn, and a daughter Victoria Biddulph, and her husband Scott, and four grandchildren, Tara and Scott Biddulph and Maria and Gina Purgavie. Also surviving are two sisters, Isabella Kelly and Catherine Commini and her husband Charles, three sisters-in-law Greta Purgavie, Alice Purgavie, and Rita Scozzari and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held on Monday at 11 AM at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors with Deacon James Challender officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 6 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation, 11 Independence Way, Newark, DE. 19713.
