Obituary of Zolton Szucs

Zolton “Pete” Szucs, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Skilled Nursing Center, Lawrenceville, NJ.
Zolton was born in Garfield NJ as the fifth of nine children of Istvan and Borbala Szucs,. After graduating from No. 2 School, he worked at Botany Worsted Mills in Passaic and later served in the NJ State Guard. He enlisted in the US Army on March 9, 1949 and, after completing training at Fort Monmouth, was stationed at Cape Canaveral FL. At the then-fledgling site, he participated in Project Bumper, the first long-range multiple-stage V-2 launches over the Atlantic. His tour of duty was curtailed when he was re-assigned and moved with the 2nd Infantry Division to Kunu-ri, North Korea in November 1950. Following his tour of duty, he was transferred to Sendai, Japan for advanced electronics training. After his honorable discharge as Sergeant on September 30, 1952, he accepted an offer from a fellow veteran from his unit in Korea for a position with ITT in Nutley. As an electronics field engineer, he served for 38 years in multiple assignments in Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, Morocco, South Vietnam and throughout the US. On his retirement in 1990, Pete returned to Garfield and continued his lifelong interests in electronics, developing his own computer applications and interests online. He was a member of the VFW, Garfield Post 2867, where he served two
terms as its Post Commander.
Predeceased by his siblings Stephen, John, Ernest, William, Louis, Helen and Elizabeth; he is survived by his sister, Marie Mirro, her husband, Joseph, of Ballston Spa NY, a brother-in-law, Albert Sova, of Jackson NJ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 11:30AM at Our Lady of Rosary Chapel, 1 Bishops Drive, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
Interment with military honors will follow at Brigadier General Wm C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, N. Hanover Twp., NJ.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday morning from 8:30-10:30AM at Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
Due to floral restrictions at the cemetery, the family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be sent to Morris Hall/St. Joseph’s Skilled Nursing Center, c/o Darlene Hanley, 2381 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville NJ 08648-2024 (www.morrishall.org).
