Rose Katherine (Berenato) Springer, 93, died peacefully at her Lawrenceville, New Jersey, home, on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, after a long illness.
Born in Hammonton, New Jersey, on March 14, 1923, she was graduated from Hammonton High School, and worked for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; and Ellis Island. She was married to her husband of 62 years, James Robert Springer, on November 14, 1953, in Washington, D.C., and moved to Richmond, Virginia, and, in 1966, to Lawrenceville. She earned a Diploma in Practical Nursing at Mercer County Vocational Technical School and worked as an L.P.N. in maternity at St. Francis Hospital in Trenton. A member of St. Ann=s Church, Lawrenceville, she was active in the Altar Rosary Society, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), and the A Dirty Dozen,@ a group which raised funds for that Church through holiday parties, dinners, and dances. In addition to spending time with her grandchildren, she loved to travel, including trans-Atlantic cruises and to Italy (several times), and to cook, especially hearty Sicilian cuisine which she learned from her mother.
Her parents, Dominic Berenato and Katherine (Tomasello) Berenato, as well as her siblings, Samuel Berenato, Mary Burns, John Berenato, Lena Berenato, and Anthony Berenato, all predeceased her. She is survived by, in addition to her husband, James Robert Springer, her daughter Donna Marie (Springer) Russo and husband Thomas M. Russo III, of Hamilton, New Jersey; her son James Robert Springer Jr. and wife Judith Anne Springer, of Lawrenceville; New Jersey; and daughter Kathleen Ann (Springer) Mancini and husband Jeffrey Paul Mancini, of Midlothian, Virginia; by grandchildren Patrick Russo, Christopher Springer, Gavin Springer, Emily Mancini, and Douglas Mancini; by sisters-in-law Anne Berenato, of Hammonton, and Janice Springer and Iona Springer, both of Tennessee; and by many nieces and nephews.
