Betty May Acquaviva (nee Grieb) Obituary

Betty May Acquaviva (née Grieb) was born January 1933 in Trenton NJ.

She was predeceased by her parents William Grieb and Beatrice McCoy; her husband, Vincent M. Acquaviva; her son Drew A. Acquaviva (Sally), Hamilton, her brothers William, Frank, Richard and David Grieb and sisters June Sheppard, Trenton, and Lorraine De Bronzo, Hamilton. She is survived by her daughter Bette Lynne Marranco (Carmen), Ewing, and son Dean V. Acquaviva (Clothilda) Lawrence, her sister Shirley Sobieski (John) Ewing, and brother Robert (Butch) Grieb, West Virginia. Betty also had numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She returned to school at Trenton State College (TCNJ) obtaining her teaching certificate in 1975 after raising three children and supporting her husband’s career for many years. Betty was an educator, teaching English for more than 23 years at South Hunterdon Regional High School.

She was a very popular member of the staff at SHRHS, appearing in student cabarets, chaperoning numerous trips to Europe, and shepherding many students through the difficult high school years.

As a young ingénue, Betty used to impress all in attendance when she and boyfriend Vince would roller-skate dance, forwards and backwards, together at the Capital Skating Arena in Trenton.

She was an avid bowler and enjoyed league bowling for most of her young adult life, often winning Highest Game trophies, and helping her team win league championships. She dabbled in golf, her husband Vince’s favorite sport, but never really got the “bug” like her husband did.

Betty loved to travel, whether to far away countries or just traveling down to Atlantic City to enjoy the excitement of winning at the slots.

A prolific knitter, she excelled at yarn work, creating all sorts of beautiful fabric art that she shared with her family at first, then she began to donate Afghan blankets to a sect of nuns who distributed them to indigent people.

She will always be remembered for her quick wit, her ebullient sense of humor and her brilliant smile that warmed and disarmed anyone in its presence.

Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.
