Mary came to as many family gatherings - bridal and baby showers, fire pits, holidays, spring flings, fall romps, etc. - as she possibly could, often with lots of food, goodies, wine, hand towels and gifts in hand! She’d often stay over. We’ll all miss those events, her camaraderie, and the intimate conversations around them. Gnome what I’m saying!

Mary was a great “big sister” to me. She did more for all of us when we were little than we’ll ever know. I’ve even forgiven her for dressing me up as her baby sister. I guess I did get even every time she sat on the couch and I put my feet on her hip and thigh and did “vibrator on” rapid pulses. I looked up to her. On my first school bus ride I sat with her, only to be told the bus was segregated by gender. She carted us to swim practice and baby sat us all summer. She was a role model in putting herself through nursing school and then nurse anesthetist training and certification. She’d find time to have us over for dinner. She loaned me money to get situated after I graduated college. She was always kind hearted and generous, loved the holidays, and loved her family and friends - a role model to the end. I feel I’ve lost somewhat of a kindred spirit. I’ll miss her terribly, as will we all.

Mrs. Agnes was such a sweet, thoughtful, and understanding person. Having Amy as a best friend since the first grade, Mary Beth always treated me like family. She allowed me to sleepover countless nights and basically grow up in their home. I will forever miss her kind words and kind heart, and I’ll even miss the times when she didn’t let me leave the dinner table until I finished everything on my plate. When I got my tonsils taken out as a kid, opening my eyes and her smile being the first face I saw. Even on my wedding day, Mary Beth and Amy were the first faces I saw before the ceremony and the amount of love I felt from them alone was overwhelming. I want to thank her for absolutely everything she’s done for me throughout my life, being another mother figure to me when I needed it, and just overall being the type of person that we need more of in the world. She was/is a true angel and will be forever missed

I attended Saint Gertrude HS with Mary. We pretty much took the same classes and had the same schedule each year. I have memories of riding the bus with Mary in the afternoons, of being on the yearbook staff together -such fun. Mary was smart, friendly, funny, a real friend to all. My condolences to her family. May her memory be a blessing to you all.

Aunt Mary was a constant, loving presence in my life from the time I was born. No one could ask for a better godmother! Even though we moved all over the place when we were young with my Dad's Army assignments, Aunt Mary kept in touch with regular calls; she never forgot a holiday or a birthday. When we were stationed in Germany in the late 1980s - in the pre-internet, pre-cell phone, expensive international calling days - Aunt Mary used to send us care packages with all sorts of treats, a very kind gesture on its own (I am sure international shipping was a pretty penny back then) but what made these packages extra special was that she would painstakingly record TV shows from the US and ship us VHS tapes full of everything we were missing back in the US. We lived in a small German town and couldn't pick up any American TV, so watching "Muppet Babies," nature documentaries, and the 1988 Olympics until the tapes wore out was a way for us to feel connected to home. Now that I am an adult with my own full-time job, I marvel at what a huge investment of time and energy those care packages were!
Reading through other messages in this book, I see so many other stories like this one - she cared for all of us and manifested that care in so many thoughtful ways. This world is a better place because she was in it!

I have so many fond memories of my Aunt Mary over the years - always making the effort to drive down for family gatherings and the big moments in my life, always full of laughter and love.
When I was around 11, we took a beach vacation with three of the families - mine, Mary’s, and Bruce’s. Aunt Mary was in charge of finding a hotel and she did. When we arrived, we quickly realized that the photos she saw were outdated and hotel was a pile of CRAP. The pool was drained and the slide cracked in half. We were the only guests. The adults were trying to decide if we could stay there or not, when someone flushed the toilet. All of the lights in the room started flickering. Everyone erupted into laughter and decided to find a new hotel. Aunt Mary was beside herself with laughter and took it all in stride as everyone teased her about this decrepit hotel. At the new hotel, amenities were much improved but sleeping provisions were not - the four girl cousins ended up sharing a room with Aunt Mary, who snored the night away and kept us all up! It was such a memorable trip.
In 2014 we took a larger Boyle trip to OBX. We got into the tradition of playing Apples to Apples each night in one of the houses, which got a lot of snorting laughter out of Aunt Mary. One night, cards gave way to some serious drinking. Aunt Mary was sitting in a recliner and kept demanding a refill of pink wine from her throne. She must have had 4 or 5 glasses. She was making everyone laugh, telling old Boyle memories. When she tried to get up to go to bed, it all hit her at once and she could barely stand!!! It was hilarious.
When Aunt Mary met my husband Steve, she welcomed him into the fold seamlessly and began affectionately calling him “Doppler Steve”, which quickly turned into her screaming DOP whenever she wanted a weather update. Steve has fond memories of Aunt Mary making him laugh and teaching him some of the family lore. Our dog Mason also loves Aunt Mary; she is one of the few people that he took to right away, backing up to her to get booty scratches. He could sense that she is a dog person, I guess.
Aunt Mary came to stay and help with my wedding and baby showers, and was so excited for me for these milestones. She knit a gorgeous blanket for my daughter Vivienne, who will be sad to never meet her Great Aunt. She gifted me roughly 2,000 hand towels from Home Goods. There are countless other visits to Grandpa’s house in Richmond, Thanksgivings in Manassas that she came down for, and in childhood we visited NJ (Sesame Place) and NYC. I will miss my Aunt Mary’s infectious laugh, zany personality, giving nature, and excitement to be with family.
With love,
Ashley Steve Vivienne and Mason

Mom,
You filled my life with so much love, laughter, and light. You taught me that joy could be found in the simplest things—a hot Wawa coffee in the morning, a warm slice of Vic’s pizza, a Hallmark Christmas movie, or the satisfaction of finishing your daily Wordle. You showed kelly and I how to savor life, whether it was “sunbathing” in your favorite chair in the backyard, reading a good book, or eating breakfast at our favorite spots every Sunday.
You gave so much of yourself to others—through your work as a CRNA, through your friendships, and most of all through the love you poured into our family. You adored your grandpaws and spoiled them rotten, cherished your time with friends, and always found ways to make ordinary moments feel extraordinary, especially when you constantly burned the bread.
When I think of you, I’ll always picture your smile and the peace you found in the simplest things. You were the heart of our family, and the world is gentler, kinder, and brighter because you were in it.
I’ll carry you with me in every laugh, every walk walking the dogs when the sun is rising, every Sunday breakfast. I love you forever and cannot wait to see you again.

Aunt Mary was a part of so many of my family memories—you always knew it was a good time when her snort-laugh made an appearance. I’ll never forget riding the train on our trip to NYC or getting her to take her first Fireball shot at the lake (her reaction was unforgettable). She showed up for every big moment in my life, from bridal showers to baby showers, always with love and way too many gifts. When she found out Emerson’s nursery theme, she sent the sweetest elephant towel. For my baby shower she knit the most beautiful blanket for Emerson, one that her soon-to-be baby sister will now get to share—a little piece of Aunt Mary they’ll both grow up with. We will miss her deeply.

“Does the Manassas Boyle Hotel have a room for me?” Mary stayed with us for a number of times in recent years. She always made the long drive down from NJ to show up for our family, from baby showers to Thanksgivings! We loved having her and will miss her visits. Of course Mary never came empty handed, always loading us up with gifts and goodies. On one of those visits, I was playing Wordle and she asked what I was doing. I showed her and helped her play her first game. She was hooked, and has been playing the daily Wordle ever since. She has texted me twice with “I got it in one try!” She was so happy. (I’ve never got it in one try!) I will always look back fondly on the times Mary came to stay; you really get to know someone in a new way when you are under one roof.

I remember the first Christmas after my dog, Cassie, died, I was celebrating Christmas with my dad. He handed me a present from Aunt Mary. I opened it and it was a hand-made Christmas ornament with Cassie's name on it. I was touched she had gone to all that effort for me. She did the same thing when my dog, Bella, passed away. I'll always remember Aunt Mary's kindness and generosity every Christmas when I put those up.

Mary was my big sister - I was the second of seven children. As the toddler army grew, and our parents found their time increasingly divided among us, with whoever was the latest arrival requiring the most attention, Mary became the guide, the teacher, the protector, the shepherdess. She was my inspiration to learn to read, to swim, to do well in school, to try to be a decent person. Her impact on me was substantial, particularly in my youngest and most formative years, and I will always be so grateful for how she was there helping me navigate the world.
Kind, thoughtful, unselfish, and so generous, Mary was a gift to us. The world is a poorer place now without her, but we're all richer for having had her in our lives.
Kelly and Amy, you are strong and good women, but I know this is a difficult new chapter in your lives. Please know that, as Mary always had my back, I will have yours.

I met Mary when I was 19 years old, 51 years ago. She welcomed me into the Boyle family and became a sister I never had. She was my Maid of Honor and godmother to my firstborn, Katie.
Through the years, life kept us apart as we moved frequently with the Army and she moved to New Jersey, but she always made the effort to stay connected. Phone calls, visits that meant long drives for her, cards, surprise gift boxes, handmade gifts. We still use and treasure the afghan she crocheted for our wedding and the beautiful Christmas ornaments we hang every year. She was just a very loving and generous soul and I hope she knew how much she meant to me.
Miss you, Mert.

I have so many fond memories of my big sis, but it's the simple things I remember most. When I was in grade school and Mary started driving, sometimes she'd take me to Arby's for a milkshake after school -- a big deal when you weren't supposed to "spoil your appetite" for dinner. When I started driving, Mary let me borrow her nifty light blue Datsun B-210 so I could look cool at school. Although she didn't know it, she also turned me on to the Beatles when I raided her record collection.
Mary also was an adult to admire, after putting herself through anesthesia school and working weekends in MCV's emergency room. She always had incredible stories about the "Knife and Gun Club," as she called the ER. I don't think I've ever known anyone who worked as hard as Mary did, while raising two wonderful daughters.
Fast-forwarding ahead a few decades, when Mary came down a day early for my 60th birthday in 2024, we had a delightful day, visiting the "Beer Palace" of Sierra Nevada, and having a lovely lunch at the Grove Park Inn, with my wife Grace coming along. We had wonderful conversations about growing up, our parents, our family, her family and more.
Mary wore a purple velour track suit and a hat that looked like a powdered wig from Colonial times, but she just did not give a damn -- the outfit was a colorful as she was. I'll really miss that about her, the way she so thoroughly enjoyed life, without worrying about what other people thought. That's a good lesson to carry with you. Love you, sis. And thanks for helping to raise me.

Mary had such a huge heart, loved to shop, loved to shower people with gifts (not just family and friends, either, but anyone going through a tough time), traveled to just about every family function even though traveling wasn't easy for her, loved a good long chat on the phone, sneezed in short little bursts and snorted when she laughed, spoiled her granddogs rotten, and more than anything in the world loved her two girls Kelly and Amy. Mary had the Boyle gift of gab, could be a tad bit bossy and a wee bit opinionated, worked long hours and hard shifts for many years, always made sure you had a good time when you visited her, was a great cook, was a collector of many things (metal birds, angels, cookbooks, gnomes, holiday decorations, anything HomeGoods ...), and had a mischievous side to her at times. She loved busy patterns and bright colors and Brighton jewelry, and had a sense of style all her own. Ugg slippers and bright red bathrobes worn out in public? Check! Velour track suits and fuzzy hats? Check! She did not care what anyone thought, she was unapologetically Mary! She will leave a huge hole in our family, and in the seven siblings, but she will live on in our love of Thanksgiving and Christmas, showing up for each other at the many Boyle family get togethers, and in our memories and love. And Mary, we're going to watch out for Kelly and Amy, and love them as our own kids.

Dearest Kelly and Amy,
We are so sad to learn the news about your Mom.
Her obituary describes her perfectly, but it did not mention how much she loved angels. I often thought that SHE was one, and now there is one less angel on this earth.
We have so many happy memories of her, and the many occasions we spent with your family over the years, when we were living in Lawrenceville.
Mary Beth was so very thoughtful, kind, and generous. She truly was the person who would give you the shirt off her back, and without ever wanting it back!
I am sorry that we fell out of touch after we moved from Lawrenceville. There’s a lesson to be learned: don’t waste time thinking about renewing old friendships - do it today!
We are grateful to God for the many blessings Mary Beth brought to our lives.
God be with you at this difficult time - and always.

We had the great pleasure of hosting Mary at our house on many occasions. She was the ultimate guest… never showing up empty handed, pitching in with food prep and cleanup, and never at all minding that one or all of our three dogs were mooching off of her and even jumping into bed with her for an early morning wake up . She loved them just like she loved us.
Several years ago Mary messaged me asking for the names of all the pets we had EVER had. I wracked my brain and sent them to her. What shows up in the mail before Christmas? A box of handmade ornaments.. one for each pet we ever had with their names. I know I will shed a few tears hanging them from now on.
Mary was probably the only person that could ever talk this non-shopper and Christmas grinch into going to a Christmas arts and crafts show at the old Fairgrounds. And I had a good time.
I will miss your laugh, the way you genuinely cared about us and showed it, the way you loved your brother, my husband.
See you one day again my sweet sis (in law).

Wow, what can I say about this fantastic women other than she will be very missed. Marybeth welcomed my daughter into her home regularly for sleep overs with Amy. Amy and my daughter were very close as children and they still stay connected as adults. My older daughter even watched both Amy and Kelly in the summer.
I don't think I will ever met another like her, she was so kind hearted, loved to laugh, she was so welcoming to not only my children but to me as well!! I had the honor of her always inviting me over for parties and to just sit and talk.
I have photos of a Halloween when I took my daughter to Mary's house to trick or treat and I myself was in costume. Mary just HAD to take photos and she gave them to me after she developed them, my only regret is, I just wish she was in the photos too!! My family and I loved her and I hope sharing this small memory will bring her family at least a smile. I know I will miss her deeply, my condolences to the family.
