Christina Smires Obituary

 


Christina Smires, 94, of Lawrenceville passed away on Saturday June 21, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family.


 


Born in West Trenton NJ to Dominick De Francesco and Ida Muscente DeFrancesco.  She attended Cathedral High School and later Trenton Central High School graduating in 1948.  Her first job at the age of 15 was at Helen’s Candy Shop and then Montgomery Ward Department Store.  After graduating from high school Christina was employed full time as a Senior Clerk at the NJ State Department of Health until she left to raise her daughter.  She assisted her husband Tom as the bookkeeper for his business at Atlantic Gas and Service Station on Rte. 1.  Christina also was employed part time for Lawrence Twp. Board of Education and then at The College of New Jersey.


 


Christina was a life member of the Slackwood Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.  She and her husband enjoyed spending time with their firehouse friends working at bingo, fundraisers and traveling.  Along with her friend Connie, Christina enjoyed rooting for the New York Yankees.  Christina loved having her family for the holidays and baking her famous cakes and pizzelles.  Family was the love of her life, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. 


 


Predeceased by her husband Thomas J. Smires of 67 years, her brother Frank DeFrancesco and sister Mary (Marie) Cleary.  She is survived by her daughter Alice Kmiec and husband Joseph of Lawrenceville, her grandchildren Lisa Kmiec, Thomas Kmiec, his wife Jennifer and great grand-daughter Sophia, sister Arlene Butkosky her husband George, brother Dominick DeFrancesco, sister-in-law’s Clara Briggs, Estella Smires and Diane Smires, and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.  She tried to stay in touch with her family and always remembered their birthdays. 


 


Thank you to everyone who sent cards and well wishes.  A special thank you to all the relatives and friends who visited with Christina and called her on the phone every week during her final months, especially her sister-in-law’s Stella and Clara, her Cousins Paulette, Carlton, Donna and her two longtime friends Joan and Connie.  Much appreciation to her caregiver Iza who was there to help her every day.


 


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 27 at 11 AM at the Church of St. Ann, 1253 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville, NJ.


 


Entombment will follow in the Ewing Cemetery Mausoleum, 78 Scotch Road, Ewing.


 


Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to Mass beginning at 9:30 AM in the Chapel at the Church of St. Ann.
