Obituary of Arthur S. Thomas, III
After a long and valiant fight, Arthur Seymour Thomas III (“Tom”) passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025. He was with his children and his wife of 42 years, Nancy. He was 80 years old.
Tommy was born in New York, N.Y., but lived most of his childhood in New London, N.H. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., followed by Amherst College, and earned a Master's degree from Pepperdine University.
Tom served in the Navy as a naval aviator from 1970 to 1976. He loved flying. He spent most of professional life working with adolescents in boarding schools including St. Paul's School, Wyoming Seminary, and the Peddie School, with the last 22 years of his career as a college counselor at the Lawrenceville School.
Tom’s favorite times were gathering family and friends in his home for good food and drink, especially in Lake Placid, N.Y. He particularly enjoyed connecting with young people and sharing in their successes and challenges. He loved golf, skiing, college basketball, and traveling. He embraced being part of the large Ughetta family and had a special bond with his many nieces and nephews.
Despite numerous health complications over the course of his life, Tom always had a sense of humor and found joy in small things. He was blessed with a second chance at life after receiving a heart transplant in 2006. Tom and his family are forever grateful for the gift of life from the Stepien family. Michael Stepien’s heart gave Tom 18 more years of a very rich life; he never took those days for granted.
Tom is survived by his wife Nancy of Lawrenceville, N.J.; his four children Reid (Carey) of Exeter, N.H.; Rob (Tamar) of Dover, N.H.; Jackie Foster (Tait) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Chris (Lauren) of Houston, Texas; and his eight grandchildren: Finley (18), Corinne (14), Arlo (7), Georgia (4), Keslye (3), Rosalie (1), Cannon (1), and Agnes (1).
A memorial service will be held on February 15, 2025 at 1 pm in the Edith Memorial Chapel at the Lawrenceville School. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or the Gift of Life Donor Program.
