We will all miss grandma Helen so much!
Growing up alongside Stephen, Matthew, and Catherine, I came to know Grandma Helen as if she was our own grandma.
She was a petite lady, but quite the spitfire!
May she Rest In Peace and watch over us all.
Love, Marianna and Christina

Donna and I had met at NYU Medical Center on our first job after graduating. We became very close friends, just like sisters, and eventually godmothers to each other’s children. I met her mother during our course of friendship, and have very fond memories of the time we’ve spent together. We’ve shared in special moments such as Donna’s bridal shower and wedding, the birth of her children, and Stephen’s wedding, and so much more.
Helen was a great cook, and I will always cherish the family dinners in Stonybrook. She was such a chatty person, and could almost out-talk me!
I will miss visiting her and seeing her smiling face. She was such a spunky woman, even til the end!
It’s rare to have a happy mother-in-law relationship, but Helen and Fred were incredible! Helen was always saying how great Fred is and what a wonderful job he does at being there in every capacity for his family. We will miss Helen terribly. I am lucky to have had her in my life, “Mama Mangione”. I know that she will be happy to be reconnected with the love of her life up in heaven.

Helen Mangione was the daughter of an orphaned, then-single-mother Irish immigrant that traveled to Ellis Island and relocated to New York City. She always told stories of growing up in College Point (Queens), NY, and living a life that could only be appropriately conveyed by a compilation of the lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits. Her occupation was that of a telephone operator. Her husband was a marine veteran; and so too, Grandma an American patriot. She was a Notre Dame mother, and a New Yorker at her core.
But Helen Mangione was better known to most as “Mom,” “Grandma Helen,” “Grams,” and, more recently, “Great Grandma.” In fact, she insisted that she never be called, simply, “Helen.” To those that bore no relation to Grandma, this might have seemed peculiar. But over time it became clear to us closest to her that she insisted on being a Grandma to everyone; “Everyone’s Grandma” if you will.
What is a grandma? She is a caregiver and babysitter that will make herself available no matter the inconvenience, date, or time. She is warm hugs, and someone who sneaks you candy and ice cream. She is fictional bedtime stories that feature you and your brother as the stars. She is someone that will buy you your first SEGA Genesis, even though your parents don’t allow gaming systems in the house. She attends ALL of your sporting events and can be the ENTIRE cheering section. She hosts her grandchildren at her Stoney Brook, Long Island house all summer-long, where she helps build forts and buys you a summer’s worth supply of 7up. She will drive from Miami to South Bend to watch you play your one or two games at Notre Dame stadium. Then she will meet your wife. And then she will dance with you at your wedding. She is someone that will sing your praises, punish and then forgive your mistakes. She tells you to not “sweat the small stuff” and reminds you of the old times and “all that was good and that can be good again.” That is because her love is unconditional.
That is what my Grandmother was to me and then, us. And that is what she wanted to be to everyone as “Everyone’s Grandma.”
Rest In Peace Grandma. You will never know just how much you meant to me and us.
Love,
Stephen, Louise, and Luke

I remember your mom always with a happy energetic personality and caring what you had to say. She was funny and always engaged in conversation. The old High School days were always fun for us because she loved having me and Donna’s friends gather at her house for a bit of fun. She sure was a fighting Irish spirit and a good sport. I’ll miss seeing her again.
RIP Helen

My dearest Grams, the Queen of Insta-Gram, the best of the best...My heart is broken that you were taken from us on January 3rd. I will forever cherish all the memories I have of you. From babysitting and taking care of us when we were kids, to Christmases and graduations, to our tea and nail dates. As you always reminded us, your Irish blood is the reason you were able to live 96, almost 97 amazing years. I will miss how you made everyone around you laugh with your one liners and your Frank Sinatra singing abilities. Even though 2020, took away so much more time that we could have spent together, I take comfort in knowing that you will continue to watch over us everyday. I miss you and love you always.❤️

Helen loved all the old music - come fly with me, my funny valentine, I left my heart in san francisco, you made me love you and so many others. She was an intense BINGO player. She loved to sit out and watch the birds gather and hop. In her past, she was a night shift nurse married to a police officer - a strong lady who could cook delicious Italian meals! She was also mannerly, lady like and kept herself so nicely. Helen, you reaped what you sowed - you were great to your family and they were devoted to you in turn. Now you can watch over them from heaven, with your beloved husbsnd by your side.
